FRANKS, FLECK, HENECKE, GASE HEAT UP HAWKEYE DOWNS

By Brad Grupe

(Cedar Rapids, IA  041902)—The fans who braved chilly temperatures for week number two of the ASA/Papa Johns Cup Championship at Hawkeye Downs were rewarded with some great on-track action as the racers heated it up on a chilly, windy evening. The presenting sponsor of the series is Iowa Wireless Megatalk.

Chris Sevey, Waterloo, took home the top prize in the 25-lap Foreman Hydraulics Legends feature, working his way through the pack from the fourth row. Sevey, who also won a dash earlier in the program, bolted into the lead early in the race and was never challenged in his challenge for the checkers.  Tom Frady finished second with Kyle Hinrichs crossing the stripe in third.

Jeff Franks led a tightly jammed pack of cars to the checkered flag in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stock feature. Franks started on the pole and never relinquished the lead despite the caution flag compacting the field a couple of times. Franks held off Bob Ahrendsen and Randy Filling, who finished second and third.

In the Miller Time Modified feature, Bob Gase took the lead from Keith Gogel with ten laps in the books and then held off repeated charges from the 2001 modified champ  Mike Schulte to gain the win. The front  of the pack ran wheel to wheel near the midpoint of the race but Gase retained control of the point with Schulte and Trent Ross finishing second and third.

John Henecke emerged victorious in a wild Budweiser Sportsman feature that saw three different leaders before Henecke took the lead just past the halfway mark of the 25-lap race. Last weeks winner, Curt Van Der Wal finished second after starting in the sixth row. Brian Franks finished a very strong third.

Dudley Fleck led the 30-lap Performance Concepts Late Model from start to finish but not without surviving several caution flags. Fleck was hounded by Jim Ross through the first half of the event but Justin Diercks, who won last weeks feature, slipped into second with  eight laps to go and Ross settled for third.

Greg Kastli won the Tri-County Car Company Late Model Dash.

Racing continues April 26 when the Hawkeye Downs Late Models and Super Stocks will be joined by the Planet Pages Mid-American Stock Cars and Super Trucks.
