ROUND 2 OF HAWKEYE DOWNS SEASON THIS WEEKEND
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 4/16/02) The Hawkeye Downs Speedway
season continues this weekend, with racing Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday. It’s the second round of the “ASA/Papa
John’s Cup presented by Iowa Wireless.” Five divisions will be in action.
Saturday, it’s the second leg of “Royal Flush
Plumbing Short track Saturday Night” Seven classes will race on Saturday.
Last Friday’s opening night provided close finishes
in all five divisions.
Justin Diercks won the opening night “Performance
Concepts Late Model” feature, and leads the point race. Steve Carlson is
second, 2 points out, while Johnny Spaw is third, 4 points back of Diercks.
Defending champ Curt Van Der Wal picked up where he
left off, winning the Budweiser Sportsmen feature. Van Der Wal has a 2 point
lead on Kevin Lee, with Steve Kibort third, 4 points out of first.
Ageless Arlo Becker won the opening night Miller
Time Modified feature. He leads Larry Clausen by 2 points. Defending champion
Mike Schulte is third, 4 points behind Becker.
Kurt Bohnsack won the Barron Motor Supply Super
Stock feature. He leads Doug Simon by 2 points and Randy Filling by 4 points,
in the championship race.
Al Smith topped a big field of Foreman Hydraulics
Legends opening night. He leads Kevin Foreman by 2 point and young Kyle
Hinrichs by 4 points.
Grandstand gates open at 6pm both Friday and
Saturday with practice starting at that time. Racing begins at 7:30pm both
nights.
(Cedar Rapids, IA 4/16/02)- The entries are rolling in for the first ever USAC Sprint Car and Midget Car double-header at Hawkeye Downs Speedway Friday, May 3. Track officials have received 32 entries at the close of business Tuesday, April 16. Many more entries are expected for the “Advance Auto Parts USAC open Wheel Classis.”
Several prominent names in Open Wheel racing will be
on hand May 3, and the event will be televised on ESPN2 on a tape-delayed basis
Thursday, May 16.
Entries of note include Dave Darland, AJ and Aaron
Fike, Jay Drake, Dave Steele, JJ Yeley, and Tracy Hines.
A free practice and autograph session will be held
Thursday, May 2 from 5pm-8pm. Discount coupons for the Friday, May 3 event are
