SIMON,
COGHLAN, SCOTT AMONG ‘SHORT TRACK SATURDAY NIGHT’ WINNERS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
By

(Cedar
Rapids, IA 041302) The inaugural edition of CRD Promotions’
Short Track Saturday Night provided some great quarter-mile racing to heat up a
cool evening at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The opening night of racing was
sponsored by Jim’s Auto Body.
The program features Automotive Fuel Systems Stock
Cars, Lacey Plumbing Outlaw Super Stocks, Rock Solid Chassis Modifieds, Wholly
Smokes Women On Wheels, Barron Motor Supply 2-Driver Cruisers and Vintage
Coupes.
Doug Simon captured the 25-lap Outlaw Super Stock
Feature after starting in the back of the field. Simon’s outlaw machine was
sporting something that resembled an upside –down sprint car wing on his rear
deck and it did appear that it had some stabilizing affect on the car. Ron
Fisher, who won a heat event earlier finished in second with Tim Dains
finishing third.
Dave Coghlan, Sr. put on a equally impressive
performance in the modifieds taking the win after starting near the back of the
pack. Coghlan took the lead from Derek Scott near the halfway point before
cruising to the win. Scott finished in second while Derrick Bliss finished in
third.
Dana Scott’s Women On Wheels win yielded what was
probably one of the most jubilant victory lane celebrations that Hawkeye Downs
has ever seen. Scott started on the point by virtue of the draw and drove a
mistake free race to capture the win. Scott has been a long-time competitor in
the Women On Wheels division and this was her first win. Jenn Harrington
finished a solid second with Deb Mefford third.
The stock car feature went to Ron Jarrett who drove
a flawless race from the pole to earn top honors. If Jarrett was allowed a
rear-view mirror he would have seen some great action as Mike Walsh motored
through the field to finish in second. Walsh started in the fourth row after
winning a heat race earlier. Marty Sea, who held second place for much of the
25-lap event finished in third.
The 2-Driver Cruiser feature was not without some
controversy as CRD Promotions Officials awarded the win to “Team O’Brien” after
another car apparently spun them out on the final lap. The Matt Jones Jones
entry finished second with Derek Scott and an unknown co-pilot finished in
third.
Racing resumes Saturday, April 20 with all 6 classes
in action.
